Scrapbook of news clippings and articles compiled by John P. Kelley of Deadwood, Black Hills, Dakota Territory in 1879. The articles discuss a variety of topics and people including crime, mining, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, the Black Hills, the fire of 1879, railroads, John P. Kelley's life, stagecoaches, and Native Americans. The scrapbook has a green cover exterior with decorative black lettering on front reading "Scrapbook." The articles indicate that John P. Kelley split his time between the Black Hills area and New York.

The Old Soldier's Home was in Hot Springs, SD and this form was used to allow members of the Grand Army of the Republic to ride the railway to the hospital for half price.

Metal key, dark brown-green in color. Shaft of the key is a hollow cylinder. The shaft has a flattened metal ring at one end that is stamped on one side with "C M & S T P R R". The other end of the shaft has a flattened irregularly shaped metal piece.

Creamy-white bone china. Decal featuring rock formation and across bottom of decal in black lettering is,' "Tower of Babel" Mammoth Crystal Cave Near Deadwood. So. Dak." The decal features Tower of Babel on a teacup. Slightly scalloped lip and decorative handle.The cup has a slight upward bell shape and a hooked handle. Gold trimmed edges and gold colored inlay on handle. On bottom of cup is label in black that reads, " Made in England for the Mammoth Crystal Cave. Co Near Deadwood So. Dak. on Fremont Elkhorn and Mo Valley Ry Line."

Rectangular wooden base painted gray. Attached to base is a telegraph sounder. It is comprised of a rectangular copper colored metal base with two dark brown cylinders sitting on top of it in the center. A copper colored metal arch is on one end of the copper base. Running through the center of the arch is a silver colored metal rod that also runs between the cylinders. The rod has a spring on one end and moves up and down. It is stamped on one side with "J.H. BUNNELL & CO. / NEW YORK, U.S.A." Along the top are three copper colored screws with round disks screwed on them. Hard but still flexible plastic. Cut out in shape of a 4-4-0 locomotive and coal car on track on top with a rectangular area below. Details of train are in black and black edging around rectangle. Black areas raised to show a relief with background areas filled with white paint. Yellow highlights in sides of coal car and headlight at front of train. In rectangle in red text is, "DEADWOOD CENTRAL / DEADWOOD, SD". Back on black magnet side is raised text which reads, "Magnetic Collectables / 314-334-1699" repeated twice.

Brass-colored. Square shaft with V-shaped point. Off-set flat head. Imprinted on sides with, "18. Of. May." and "Elkhorn Railroad".

Locomotive, Mine - 1879

Large steam locomotive, constructed mostly of black cast iron with gold-painted detailing. The engine is serial number 4669, built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, PA for the Homestake Mining Company. It was shipped to Bismarck by rail, then hauled to Lead by a bull train led by Louis LaPlant in June 1879. The engine hauled ore for the Homestake Mine from August 26, 1879 until it was retired in 1901. The locomotive was named for an early stockholder in the Mine. The locomotive was repainted and polished for its inclusion in the Adams Museum Collection in January 1932.

In the center of the curve of the trestle are tents, which may be temporary housing for the building crew. A separate train track, the Deadwood's Central's Nevada Gulch Line, crosses under the trestle. On the reverse, someone wrote "Horse Shoe Bend N.W. Territory".

Matted photo of the railroad depot at Pluma washed off its foundation and tilted into Whitewood Creek after the 1904 flood. The railbed is undercut and the bridge is almost washed away. W.E. Adams wrote on the matte that this building stood where the toll gate had been in 1883.

Features a small train engine on tracks edged with high banks of snow. Two men in the photograph are standing in the snow on either side of the train. They are identified as O.N. Brown and Guy Gilbert, but their placement is not accurately noted on the back of the photo. The photo was taken following a snowstorm in 1902 or 1903. Possibly the engine was "The Dinky" used in Lead and the mountain in the background may be Custer Peak, but that is uncertain.

The B&M trestles were dynamited in the 1930s when the train stopped running through the canyon.
