Series of photographs of the Homestake Band. 334-5: The Homestake Band posed in front of a building with their instruments, 1956. Possibly at Sanator in Custer County. Sharp Bits September 1956, Vol. 7 No. 8 pg 10: "The photographer was sighted, so the Homestake Band members all paused long enough to pose for this picture at Sanator." 334-10: Homestake Band posed in front of a grand stand. The photograph was taken by Black Hills Studios. 334-16: Homestake Band at Homestake Vets Picnic, Spearfish, 1961. Sharp Bits August 1961 Vol. 12 No. 7 pg. 27 "During tha annual picnics of the Homestake Veterans Association in the Spearfish City Partk, Homestake's Band presents a concert, as shown here on July 23, 1961. This park most likely sees more usage than any other in the Black Hills, including Canyon Lake in Rapid City." 334-18: The Homestake Band on parade in Rapid City during Range Days, 1956. There is a visible New York Store sign on the right hand of the photograph. Sharp Bits September 1956, Vol. 7 No. 8 pg 19: "The leader of the band carries a shovel instead of a baton. Mine hats and overalls are the trademark of the Homestake Band -- goodwill ambassadors of our company. "First Sale of Timber in U.S. Off of any National Forest was to Homestake in 1898; known as Case #1." 334-26: Homestake Band, Official Band, at 25th Anniversary of Dedication of Mt. Rushmore, 1952. Sharp Bits September 1956, Vol. 7 No. 8 pg 12 and 13: "A few years ago -- August 11, 1952 to be exact, The Homestake was official band for the Shrine of Democracy 25th Anniversary Celebration in commemoration of the dedication in 1927 by President Calvin Coolidge. In 1925, the South Dakota Legislature authorised the Mr. Harney Memorial Association to undertake the Mt. Rushmore project. No funds were made available and the project started with contributions. Homestake was one of the first to make such a contribution." 334-27: Homestake Band (not shown here) official band at 25th Anniversary Mt Rushmore Dedication, Homestake was one of VERY FIRST PRIVATE contributors when sculptor was proposed. Rushmore the Homestake band provided the official music.
