The spot was to the right of where the recreation hall used to be. Trees have grown up during this time, some even in the middle of the railroad yard." 456-2: Rose Zambon (left) and Florence Kovacevich (right) exploring the ruins of Cambria, Wyoming, 1963. Sharp Bits June, 1963 Vol. 14, No. 5 pg.1/Cover "Rose Zambon, l, and Florence Kovacevich, General Office employees of the Black Hills Operations, spent a sunny day in May exploring the ruins at Cambria, Wyoming. For many years, this famous mine supplied coal to the Burlington Railroad and much coke to the Deadwood & Delaware Smelter." 456-4: Rose Zambon (left) and Florence Kovacevich (right) sitting at a cemetary in Cambria, Wyoming, 1963. Sharp Bits June, 1963 Vol. 14, No. 5 pg. 11 "Stone and wooden headstones many dating back over one-half century, were inspected by Homestake employees Rose Zambon, l, and Florence Kovacevich on their outing at Cambria. In the background, note the quaint wodden fence that is still in good repair." 456-5: Rose Zambon and Florence Kovacevich touring a cemetary in Cambria, Wyoming, 1963. Sharp Bits June, 1963 Vol. 14, No. 5 pg. 7 "A visit to Cambria's cemetery provided an interesting link with the past as our two Homestake employees started their tour of this abandoned community. People of many nationalities and many faiths found a final resting place on this hilltop overlooking the plains. Note the old fashioned wooden fences that bordered many of the graves." 456-6: The gravestone of Ilia Traicoff, in a cemetary in Cambria, 1963. Sharp Bits June, 1963 Vol. 14, No. 5 pg. 6 "Photographs on Headstones are not often seen today. This method of remembrance was very popular in many parts of the country, particularly in the East, from the turn of the century until World War I. The process involved reproducing or etching the photograph on a ceramic coated, copper plate. A porcelain glaze keeps the image from fading or weathering." |
