Congregational Church, Deadwood |
Date |
1905-1910 |
Description |
Funeral procession for Mayor Fairbanks in front of the Congregational Church in Deadwood on Pine Street facing towards Sherman Street and the Lawrence County Courthouse. A train on the Burlington Route (present-day Sherman Street parking lot) is visible. A portion of the Presidential neighborhood can be seen in the background. John Jennack Hack Stable is also visible. The roads are dirt and the procession consists of several horse and buggies and many people. Matte reads: "Congregational Church Deadwood, Funeral of Mayor Fairbanks, church taken down in order to build Gas Station,1939." Reverse reads: "Funeral of Mayor Fairbanks. Marie Lawler & Dolly Moffet (sp?) ditched school to go to it." Uncertain if matte inscription is accurate, other records indicate the Church was torn down to make room for the four lane highway sometime in the 1940s. If it was first torn down for a gas station, uncertain what station and how long that stood. |
