Title |
Hot Air Balloon on Main Street |
Date |
1903 |
Description |
Matted photo of a hot air balloon being filled with gas before it lifted off from an open area on lower Main Street, Deadwood. The open lots were created in 1899 when the Gem Theater burned down. The balloon launch featured two female daredevils who were said to have risen some 400 feet into the air and then parachuted to safety in specially prepared devices. In the foreground of the image a large crowd is assembled to watch, including a woman holding her baby and standing on the railroad tracks. The background of the image depicts the west side of Main Street, showing a row of brick and stone buildings. All were built after a fire in 1894, including: Schwarzwald's Furniture, the Bullock-Clark building, the Apex Building, the M.B. Wilson building, and the L.M. Parker building. Written on the back in pencil is "Balloon essention // Early Day [something errased] // 1903 (in pen)." There is a red stamp that reads "Geo. V. Ayres." |
