Description |
Standard poker deck with 53rd card imprinted with the Seal of the State of South Dakota and a 54th card imprinted with information about the Ross Shaft at Homestake. See below for writing. Top side of cards are printed with a colored photograph of the Ross Headframe, Engine Room Building and Boiler Room Buildings of the Homestake Mining Co. complex in Lead. Cards have silver borders. On the 54th card: "Ross Shaft" "Homestake Mining Company" "The view appearing on the reverse side of these playing cards shows the surface plant of The Ross Shaft of the Homestake Mining Company in the beautiful Black Hills, at Lead, South Dakota, scene of the largest gold mining operation in the United States. The present depth of the shaft is 4,100 ft. and it is steel and concrete fireproof construction throughout. Ultimately the shaft will reach a depth of 5,220 ft. It has a minimum tonnage output of 4,000 tons at a 3,000 ft. hoisting depth in 15 hours, or an output of 3,000 tons at a depth of 4,000 ft. in 15 hours. The shaft has six main compartments and its overall dimensions are 14 ft.x 19 ft., 3 in. Hoisting is done electrically with drums of special design to lift the seven ton ore skips. A primary crushing plant is part of the surface installation. Operations began at the Ross Shaft in November, 1934." |
