Description |
Series of photographs of the streets of Lead. 484-1: View of Grand Avenue. Sharp Bits July 1960 Vol. 11 No. 6 pg. 14 ""What A Street!" "What a Hill!" That's what visitors exclaim when they see Grand Avenue for the first time. And who can blame them? It IS long! It IS steep! No Flooding problems exist here. Grand Avenue is one of the few straight streets of any length in Lead." 484-2: View of Matthew Street. Sharp Bits July 1960 Vol. 11 No. 6 pg. 13 "No longer can the natives give their visitors a thrill by driving them up Mathew Street. As you notice in this photo, a new traffic sign prevents it. Too bad in a way, for many a "flatlander" was breathless at the steepness of this avenue. However, traffic and pedestrian safety comes first - and it is no doubt better for all concerned this way." 484-3: Players for the July 4, 1940 baseball game parked on North Mill Street. The man standing between the cars on the right wearing a derby hat is identified as W.E. Royce. Sharp Bits January 1962 Vol. 12 No. 12 pg. 13 bottom "The citizens of Lead were celebrating July 4, 1940 by watching a baseball game. Here are many players about to depart from North Mill Street for the ballground. That's W.E. Royce former company employment manager, who is standing between the two autos on the right and wearing a derby hat." 484-4: Looking up North Mill Street from Main Street during winter, 1918. Sharp Bits November 1958 Vol. 9 No. 10 pg. 9 bottom "Looking up North Mill Street from Main Street toward the surface plants and the Open Cut. This is another view of the April 1918 38-inch snowfall. Spring was a little late that year as all snow was left in place to melt. No modern snow removal equipment was available. Incidentally, that snow must have been a lot of "ammunition" for us on those tempting street lights." 484-5: Large group of people gathered in the street. 484-7: View of houses and cars on South Mill Street, 1960. Sharp Bits July 1960 Vol. 11 No. 6 pg. 4 top "Perhaps the most important street in Lead is famous old South Mill Street. Hundreds of Homestake employees use it daily to commute to and from work. Also each day, much truck traffic uses this avenue. It is the main "artery: in our transportation blood stream. In the days before many automobiles it was a famous wintertime bobsledding run. Giant sleds, holding 10-12 person, zoomed down the hill at speeds estimated as high as 70-80 miles per hour. Severe injuries were suffered by those who lost control and crashed into walls, trees, etc." 484-9: View of some houses from the street. 484-10: View of Sawyer Street from the intersection of Milliken Street, 1960. Sharp Bits July 1960 Vol. 11 No. 6 pg. 4 bottom "Parallel to South Mill Street is Sawyer Street, another of the steep avenues that wind through Lead. This view from the intersection of Milliken Street gives an indication of grade makes winter driving a little difficult, at times!: 484-11: View of a street going down hill. 484-12: A conveyer belt right next to some unidentified buildings. 484-13: Possibly the back side of HMCC 484-14. Has some illegible handwriting at the top. Also written on it is "Please // Return to // W.J. Bingham // 1/14-1928 // Powerderman in Home [illegible] // signature // Bill Bingham // No - 1 - Costello Mill // " - 2 - Billie Markman Bar // " - 3 Dance Hall // " - 4 - Mill St. // " - 5 - Jack Daily, Blacksmith // " - 6 - Open Cut Spot. // [more illegible text]." 484-14: View of Lead City with six places identified as 1- Costello Mill, 2- Bill Markman Bar, 3- Dame Hall, 4- Mill Street, 5- Jack Daily, Blacksmith Shop, and 6- Open Cut, 1876. |
