"The Burnt District" |
Date |
1879 |
Description |
Aerial view of Deadwood after the fire of September 1879. The photograph was likely taken from the Presidential Neighborhood above the current Miller Street parking lot and shows the damage in the area of Williams, Main and Sherman Streets, between Pine and Deadwood Streets to just below (north of) Lee Street. The corner of Deadwood Street and Sherman Street is at the bottom of the photo, just left of center. The dark area just to the left of that corner is where the Adams Museum is, and it is also the site of the Empire Bakery where the fire began. The city steps are visible extending down from Williams Street in the right, upper-center area of the photo. Someone made a notation on the matte to the right of the photo, indicating where Centennial Avenue, Forest Avenue, Williams, Maine [sic] and Sherman Streets are. |
