Sharp Bits January 1962 Vol. 12, No. 12 pg. 6 "Believed to be a July Fourth prior to World War I. The scene is on North Mill Street in front of the Brick Store and Homestake's General office. That's all the information available. Sharp Bits November 1960 Vol. 11 No. 10 pg. 5 "Building a new hotel in Lead in 1927 was of major significance . The famous old Smead Hotel had to be torn down because it was in the subsidence area. As a result, Lead was without a modern hotel. A local company was organized, stock sold, and construction undertaken of a 40-room, fireproof structure at the coner of West Main and South Galena Streets. Known as the Highland, the hotel was renovated in 1960 and is now called the Gold Run Inn." Perkins (in apron), the father of retired employee Harry Perkins of lead, was well-known early day photographer-printer. S.R.
