Letter sent to Wong Fee Lee at the Wing Tsue building in Deadwood. The letter is from a brother-in-law asking for a loan. A. Letter and envelope written in Chinese characters. Envelope has postmark from Portland, Oregon and is addressed to "Wing Tsue & Co, Deadwood, Dak." Also has characters down left side. Letter is entirely written in Chinese characters, thirteen lines of text. B. Translation of letter into English "Dear Brother-in-Law, I believe you are getting along very well over there. Here the labor is very cheap, so my purse is empty now. I can't start my trip now, because of the riot of the barbarians. I lack money needed for this trip and the present living. Please send money to me when you received this letter or else you will receive bad news" |
