Series of photographs of early day mines that are not Homestake. 323-1: View of a lumber camp, a couple of miners, a tent and a wagon. The photograph is captioned with "Wheeler Ground - Deadwood Gulch -- 1876." 323-13 is the same image. 323-2: Bald Mountain mining complex, 1953. 323-4: View of a railroad and several buildings at Highland Hoist, c. 1894. Written on the photograph is "Highland Hoist about 1894" and "Big Missouri." Another caption on the image is "A scene on the Black Hills and Ft. Pierre Railroad, near Lead, showing the Caledonia hoisting works." The photograph was taken by C.C. McBride, Crawford, Nebraska. 323-5: Building complex for Canyon Corporation in Maitland, South Dakota, during winter (Ceased 1942), 1953. The photograph was taken by Black Hills Studio, Inc. A similar photograph can be found on page 22 in "A Guide to Black Hills Ghost Mines" by Mildred Fielder. 323-7: Building complex for the Columbus Consolidated Gold Mining Company. One of many early-day mines in the district 323-8: Columbus Mill Blacktail (on front), Portland Mill of Columbus Consolidated Gold Mining Company. Same buildings as in 323-7. 323-13: View of lumber, a couple of miners, a tent and a wagon. It was later purchased by Homestake Mining Co and renamed the Mineral Point. 323-22: View of a building complex at the Father DeSmet property. 323-24: View of the building complex at the DeSmet Mill & Golden Gate, c. 1895. There is a note on the back of the photograph that read "I thought this would interest you, as I never seen it before John 1895?" 323-25: View of the Mineral Point Mill (foreground) and the Father DeSmet Hoist (background) in Central City, 1907. Sharp Bits November 1953, Vol. 4, No. 10 pg. 8 "New Highway Now - This photo was taken on August 30, 1907. It pictures the Mineral Point Mill in the foreground and the Father DeSmet Hoist in the background, both located in Central City. The mill and hoist ceased operation in 1918 and were shortly therafter dismantled. The image shows buildings at the Uncle Same mine. Sharp Bits Apr 1960 "How the Uncle Sam Looked in 1934 from the same camera location as in the photo above (taken March 1960). The vein was discovered on the banks of Elk Creek in 1878 by the Delaney brothers and their partners. The first community to spring up nearby was known as Perry. It was around 1900 when Pierre Wibaux, one of the newest owners renamed the community "Roubaix," after his birthplace [in] France. This famous old producer was serviced [by] vertical 3-compartment shaft which descended to --- 700 feet below the shaft.
