Series of photographs of Deadwood. 461-2: Deadwood, at the junction of Deadwood and Whitewood Creeks, 1876. Sharp Bits July 1962 Vol. 13 No. 6 pg. 2 "No Drive-Ins, no television, no charcoal broilers were around in Deadwood's infancy, or for many years afterwards, for that matter. 1876 was the year of the big gold rush to the northern Black Hills, and a stampede of fortune hunters, claim jumpers, thieves, gamblers, prospectors, bartenders, plus countless others, was filling the gulches brimfull. This old photo shows the junction of Deadwood and Whitewood Creeks. Recognize the location?" 461-3: Deadwood, 1882. Sharp Bits July 1962 Vol. 13 No. 6 pg. 4 and 5 "By 1882, Deadwood was quite a city, having rebuilt rapidly after the disastrous 1879 business district fire. Can you find Lee, Deadwood, and Pine Street bridges? Steel and concrete structures cross Whitewood Creek in the same locations today. Main and Sherman Streets were important avenues, as they are in the automobile age. No railroad lines were yet laid to Deadwood. No Homestake Slime Plant nestled against McGovern Hill (It came in 1905-1906). No hotrodders with "Hollwyood" mufflers were around to stir up the dust, or the citizens tempers. After all, it was 80 long ago when the Historic City looked like this." 461-4: Overhead view of Deadwood, 1890. The photograph is captioned with "Deadwood, S. Dak. on the B. & M.R.R. Up until quite some years ago, Deadwood was the "Las Vegas" of the Rocky Mountains west with visitors from miles around thronging to watch or participate in the gambling hall and saloon activities. It is still a fascinating nightime scene with its colorful history permeating the whole atmosphere. The wind was so strong that it blew the forest fire across the gulches instead of dropping it into the bottoms. No doubt it was lucky that such powerful winds were in evidence or the destruction might have been much worse." 461-34: Deadwood High School. Sharp Bits July 1962 Vol. 13 No. 6 pg. 23 "The Bears have the smallest student body in the 8-town Black Hills Athletic Conference, but theirs is one of the loudest growls.
